Chiropractic What is Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a primary health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal (joints, muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments) system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. Treatment consists of a wide range of manipulation, mobilisation and soft tissue techniques. The aim is to restore and maintain improved joint and soft tissue mechanics thus relieving symptoms and improving overall health and wellbeing. Advice will be offered on lifestyle and complaint specific exercises can be prescribed to manage conditions and prevent future recurrences.
Typical conditions treated:
• Low back pain, acute or chronic
• Leg pain
• Neck pain
• Migraine / Cervicogenic headaches
• Cervicogenic dizziness
• Extremity joint conditions
• Sports injuries
This is by no means an exhaustive list. If your complaint is not listed, please call or email for more information.
Treatment Patients do not need to be directly referred by a GP, however some Private Health Insurance companies may request this.
Initially a first consultation, which lasts up to an hour, will involve a detailed case history and also includes a past medical history. A thorough physical examination will then follow to assess the affected and surrounding areas. You will most likely have to remove outer garments but a gown will be provided.
A ‘report of findings’ will then be provided, in which a possible treatment plan is discussed. If there is a need for x-rays, this will be discussed at the time. If chiropractic treatment is found not to be suitable, a referral to you GP or appropriate specialist will be discussed.
On subsequent visits, treatments usually last 15 – 20 minutes depending on the condition and treatment required. Treatment will also involve advice on lifestyle, diet and exercise.
Many patients also opt for maintenance care, receiving regular check-ups to keep the spine in optimal working condition and prevent relapses.
